Real-Time Dashboards & Alerts

Smartphones | Tablets | Web Browsers | PC & Mac | More

Visual KPI reads multiple data sources in real-time (big data, historians, databases, manual data, web services and more) and adds context with KPIs, groups/hierarchy, alerts, and geolocation. It gets your critical data in the hands of more users without extensive training and it can be deployed in days, not months. Want to see how we do it?

What is it?

Visual KPI is mobile dashboard software for any device. It reads existing data sources and delivers KPIs, scorecards, analytics and alerts in real-time.

Who uses it?

Decision makers. Operations. Remote workers. Data Junkies. Anyone who values knowing what's happening right now, regardless of their device.

Why use it?

Mobility is no longer optional. Visual KPI presents problems and opportunities before it's too late. Oh, and there's no six-month project that "might" pay off.

Access Engine Interface to Microsoft Excel Improved

Excel interface for Visual KPI improves performance and access to trend data in open workbooks.

Excel 2013 LogoWe have had great success with our Excel interface, which lets ordinary folks to use almost any Excel spreadsheet as a direct data source for Visual KPI. Those of you who have discussed this with us have surely heard us say (over and over) “please don’t think of an Excel file as a database, it is really limited.” This is still true.

After many months of real-world customer use, we started to see some strange behavior in heavily loaded systems using Excel as a data source. It seems that when Trend Data comes from Excel, any attempts to simultaneously access the file gives the second person an error while the file is locked for data retrieval by the first.

This scenario was never a problem for Current Values, since these are cached and the spreadsheet is accessed by the Cache Server as a single user. Most folks had been using Excel just for Current Values (Example: getting a Target value from Excel for a KPI whose actual value comes from a historian or database), so this problem never came up.

While there is no perfect fix for this (yet), we've found two ways to reduce the likelihood of collisions dramatically.

  1. Use the latest Access Engine available from our software prerequisites page;
  2. Save the Excel spreadsheet as a “Shared” worksheet. Not all customers will be able to make this change to their spreadsheets, but if you can we recommend it to improve the performance and reliability of the Excel interface.

Connect String for all Excel Interfaces:

Please use this connect string in the “Connect String” section of the interface in the server manager. In this connect string, replace =<> with the Path on your drive to the Excel file being used for the Excel interface.

  Driver={Microsoft Excel Driver (*.xls, *.xlsx, *.xlsm, *.xlsb)};DBQ=<>
