So, What About Security?
Like everything at Transpara, Visual KPI was built by a team of engineers that has spent their careers building software for mission critical environments like oil refineries, nuclear power plants, electrical grids and manufacturing plants. Performance, scalability, reliability and security have been top priorities in every application they have built and Visual KPI is no exception.
Security Through Better Design
Security on mobile devices and applications is a diverse topic. First, there is the issue of securing the devices themselves through authentication, etc. Second, you need a secure application. Third, there are the actions of your users which often is the most tricky part. Most importantly, how do you give your users great information, allow them to collaborate and share it, but still keep your environment secure and your data safe. Our answer lies in our design and can be described in three parts:
Picture Your IT Group, Happy
Visual KPI's security model is actually your security model. We call it security inheritance and it means we inherit the policies from your existing environment without requiring your IT department to add new considerations. We also inherit your directory structure so security can be applied to users and groups within Visual KPI just like your other applications. This means less work for IT, and no security hurdles for your implementation.
Limited Local Data, Limited Risk
Visual KPI is web based, so there is no app to install and configure on the mobile devices. This gives us the ability to support thousands of devices without creating many versions of the software, but more importantly it means a much more secure environment. Almost no sensitive data lives on the device (really just the current page, and only when it is open). This limits the footprint of exposure and insures that everyone is always looking at up to date (and the same) data. If a device is lost, stolen or compromised there isn't anything to get at, unlike with an local application.
Share Links, Not Data
What good are KPIs, trends, scorecards, dashboards and alerts if you can't share them with other subject matter experts in your organization? With most applications, sharing means packaging up the information and sending across the wire - a significant risk. Not so with Visual KPI. Our design makes sharing easy and it does so with links. You can share specific screens and alert conditions including specific views, but you are sharing a link, not the data. You can send it to the whole world, but if they don't have access to your environment (see #1 above), the link is useless.
